Music Editing
Make the Music Fit the Story.
Picture changes. Scenes tighten. Commercials get shorter. A beautiful three-minute cue suddenly needs to become forty-three seconds without sounding like someone attacked it with scissors.
Musical First. Technical Second.
Music edits should feel intentional. Where possible, phrase structure, harmony, rhythm and musical development should guide the edit rather than simply matching a stopwatch. Bars, beats and musical phrases tend to have opinions, even when the runtime does not.
The goal is to make the cue feel as though it was always meant to fit the scene at that exact length. If the audience can hear exactly where the musical surgery happened, the patient may require another pass.
