Sound Design for SEGA’s Chao Tales
Creating depth, emotion and a distinct sonic identity for short-form animation while adapting to creative direction and tight production deadlines.
The Challenge
Animation begins without usable production sound, which means every movement, environment, reaction and transition is a creative audio decision. The challenge is not simply to “add effects.” The soundtrack has to help the characters feel physical, support timing and emotion, and belong to the visual world.
Short-form work adds another constraint: there is less time for the audience to learn the sonic language of the piece. Character, tone and momentum have to communicate quickly, while the audio team still adapts to creative feedback and a compressed schedule.
The Approach
For Chao Tales, MelonCollie Productions approached music and sound design as part of the same storytelling system. Effects and sonic details were built to support character action and emotional beats, while the music helped define the project’s identity and pacing.
The process also required close adaptation to SEGA’s creative vision. In animation, a technically correct sound can still be wrong if it does not fit the character, comedic timing or world. Iteration is therefore less about fixing mistakes and more about tuning the soundtrack to the personality of the piece.
The Outcome
SEGA of America senior director of animation Yukio Kusumoto says the music scores and sound designs elevated Chao Tales, adding depth, emotion and a unique creative identity to the show.
He also points to professionalism, creativity and the ability to adapt seamlessly to the team’s vision and tight deadlines. For an animation studio, that combination matters: strong sound is useful only if it can be delivered inside the actual production process.
“Their music scores and sound designs have elevated our short-form animation project ‘Chao Tales,’ adding depth, emotion, and a unique creative identity to the show.”
